A detailed debt summary for the highest enrollment school districts from 2020 to 2022.
Visualizations of financial data published in the Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports for the 100 K-12 school districts with the highest student populations, covering fiscal years 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Note: For states, counties, and cities, we utilized 2020 Census values for population to derive per capita figures. For school districts, we put “per capita” values in “per student” terms utilizing enrollment. Given the dramatic declines in enrollment that were seen in school districts and states across the country, we pulled enrollment figures from NCES for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 school years. For other entities, increases or decreases between 2020, 2021, and 2022 are the same for “per capita” and total figures. However, in this analysis, for example, a decrease in the total net pension liability could still correspond with an increase in the per student net pension liability if enrollment declined enough.
